Fabric or leather? Choosing sofa upholstery for Delhi NCR's climate

Upholstery advice written for a temperate climate does not survive a Delhi summer. Homes across Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and Ghaziabad put a sofa through four quite different seasons in a single year: a long dusty spring, a summer where west-facing rooms cross 45 degrees behind the glass, three months of monsoon humidity, and a damp, foggy winter. Each one attacks a different property of the material.

So the honest answer to fabric or leather is not one material. It is a short list of properties to insist on, and then a material that has them. The four things the climate does

Dust, most of the year

Road and construction dust is fine, pale and constant, and it settles into any surface with texture. It is the single biggest reason a sofa looks tired here long before it wears out.

Sunlight, March to June

Long hours of very strong light. Anything sitting in a west-facing window fades unevenly, and the strip the curtain does not cover fades first.

Humidity, July to September

High humidity slows drying, which is what turns a spill into a stain and a damp cushion into a smell. It is also when untreated leather and natural fibres are at their most vulnerable.

Dry, conditioned air

Air conditioning for half the year and heaters in December do the opposite: they pull moisture out. Leather parked in front of an AC vent dries and cracks faster than leather anywhere else in the room.

How fabric performs

Fabric wins on comfort. It does not get hot to sit on in May, it does not get clammy in August, and there is no material with a wider range of colour and texture. Its weakness is that dust and spills both go into it rather than onto it.

• Choose a tight weave. Loose weaves and long piles hold dust in the structure, where vacuuming does not reach it. A dense, flat weave releases dust instead of storing it.
• Choose a mid tone with texture. Pale solids show every mark; dark solids show every speck of pale dust. A mid-tone weave with two or three shades in it hides both.
• Ask for a stain-resistant finish. A factory-applied finish makes the difference between blotting a spill and living with it. Confirm whether it is applied to the fibre or sprayed on, because sprayed finishes wear off.
• Insist on removable covers if you can. In this climate the ability to take a cover off and wash it is worth more than any other feature on the specification sheet.
• Skip boucle and open loops here. Beautiful material, wrong city. The loops collect dust and there is no comfortable way to get it out.

How leather performs

Leather is the easiest surface in a dusty city, because dust sits on top of it and comes off with a dry cloth in thirty seconds. It handles spills the same way. Over ten years it is usually the cheaper material, because it is still there.

Two caveats decide whether it is right for you. The first is heat: leather in direct sun becomes genuinely unpleasant to sit on in May, and prolonged heat stiffens it. The second is dry air, which is why the placement rule matters more than the grade.

• Full grain and top grain age well. They develop a patina and can be conditioned back to life. Bonded leather is offcuts glued to a backing, and in high humidity it delaminates and peels. It is the one upholstery to rule out here.
• Keep it out of the sun and off the AC. Not in a west window, not directly under a split unit's airflow. Half a metre of offset is enough.
• Condition it twice a year. Once before the summer and once after the monsoon. It takes twenty minutes and it is the whole maintenance routine.
• Pick a grain, not a flat finish. A visible grain hides scuffs and dust far better than a smooth, highly finished surface.

In practice the most durable arrangement is not all of one thing. Leather or leatherette on the arms and the outside back, where hands, dust and walls do the damage, with a good fabric on the seat and back cushions where you actually sit. It costs less than an all-leather sofa, sits cooler in June, and cleans nearly as easily.

The other practical answer is the boring one: whatever you choose, make sure it can be replaced. A sofa with a sound frame and re-coverable panels can be brought back to new twice over. A sofa with a sealed, non-removable cover has exactly one life.

Placement beats material

One last thing, and it applies whichever way you go. Where the sofa sits does more for its lifespan than the grade of the material on it. Off the west window, out of the AC's direct airflow, and not pressed flat against an external wall that gets damp in the monsoon. Ten centimetres of air behind a sofa is free and prevents a lot of trouble.
